Halfway between art and sport
For Olivier Dubois, dance is both a sport, in that it requires combining natural and innate abilities with rigorous discipline, but “also becomes an art when emotion takes over”. Indeed, in surpassing himself, the dancer comes closer to the artist’s quest: “There is something in Olympism that has to do with the depth of art”.
He adds that boxing, rhythmic gymnastics and aerobics are the three sports highlighted in « Podium ». Indeed, O. Dubois explains this choice by a desire to combine an urban and collective practice such as aerobics with ” metamorphosis “ almost supernatural that rhythmic gymnastics achieves. At the end of this journey, O. Dubois specifies that it is possible to accompany amateurs up to “a state of grace”, a specific step, he specifies, “which overwhelms and makes you cry ».
For a unifying Olympism
With the group of « Podium »the choreographer intends to oppose the differential that characterizes the modern Olympic Games, in order to “to highlight the celebration of living together and perhaps leave the question of the winner to the gods”In this, the artist contradicts the adage that says that “the main thing is to participate”preferring the idea of an intimate victory, like a “putting oneself in danger”e”. Thus Olivier Dubois delivers a very personal definition of victory: “To win is to discover what you thought was impossible.” ».
Desire as a source of miracles
Olivier Dubois claims to work without resorting to any form of prior selection and without professional dancers. He explains in this sense that with “Desire, we do miracles” ” He specifies in this that “the desire to be there is more than enough to succeed in this challenge of creating a piece”To do this, O. Dubois intends to start from his group of amateurs and “of what they are”, so that they can fully realize their potential.
