What record will Gérald Darmanin leave at Place Beauvau, particularly in terms of the fight against illegal immigration? The removal of migrants has increased by around 30% since the beginning of the year. But when we look at the details, it is a misleading record.

Deportations are increasing and this is undeniable. But according to information from Europe 1, only 35% of illegal immigrants known for disturbing public order are deported upon leaving administrative detention centers. Even more worrying, out of 10 foreigners reported for radicalization, four of them are then released on national territory without being sent back to their country of origin.

We are far from the promise made by Gérald Darmanin after the Arras attack, who intended to expel 100% of foreigners “considered dangerous”. “During operations, we do what is easiest”, reports a police officer on the ground.

“We are asked to prioritize Albanians or Romanians”

Especially no Afghans or Syrians, the prefectures know that they will not obtain consular passes. The police must also avoid sub-Saharan repeat offenders whose criminal convictions are not final, because they would then have too many possible recourses later to avoid expulsion.

“Conversely, we are asked to prioritize Albanians or Romanians. Families without problems except that their papers are not in order,” continues this police officer. A sort of “policy of numbers”, but not very effective in terms of public safety.
