Anne Hidalgo will not seek a third term as mayor of Paris

In an interview with Le Monde, the mayor of Anne Hidalgo officially announces that she will not run again in 2026 in the municipal elections.

The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo announces that she will not run again in 2026. Elected in 2014 – she then succeeds Bertrand Delanoë -, re-elected in 2020, Anne Hidalgo announces in an interview with Le Monde that she does not wish to seek a third mandate. “I will not run for a third term. It's a decision I made a long time ago. I have always believed that two mandates were enough to bring about profound changes. Out of respect for the Parisians, I wanted to announce it early enough and at a time that would allow us to prepare for a peaceful transmission.” she declares to our colleagues.

She assures that she will remain mayor “until the last day” with the same energy as from the beginning. “I hope that these fifteen months will be used to complete what we have to do without slowing down in the fight against climate change, and that she will continue to play politics after 2026,” explains the outgoing mayor, 65, whose second term was marked by the popular success of the Olympic Games in the heart of the city last summer.

“Not a candidate for the 2027 presidential election”

She hopes that Rémi Féraud, president of the Paris en commun group (which brings together socialists and various leftists) on the Paris Council and one of her oldest followers, will succeed her by leading a gathering of the entire left, exception of La insoumise. At 53, the former mayor of the 10th arrondissement who chairs the municipal majority group in the Paris Council, “has the necessary solidity, seriousness and ability to come together”according to Anne Hidalgo. “Rémi aims to become the next mayor of Paris. But it's not me who decides (…). It will be up to the Parisian socialist activists to decide.”she said.

Her former first deputy Emmanuel Grégoire, who became a deputy and with whom she was at odds, declared himself a candidate last week, with the support of 450 socialist activists.

“I am not at all a presidential candidate” of 2027, specifies the former PS candidate who had recorded a historically low score in the 2022 presidential election. After 2026, she wishes “helping the emergence of a social-democratic and ecological force” with the PS, but also with MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, leader of Place publique, who in his eyes could “take leadership” of this force.

“At the same time, I will continue to invest in climate justice issues, nationally and internationally”indicates Anne Hidalgo who, according to Le Chained Duckcould take the helm of the Bloomberg foundation in Brussels.
