The President of the South Region, Renaud Muselier, was also present on Thursday, June 27, alongside Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and President of the Metropolis, at the Plan-du-Var station to present the modernization plan for the Chemins de fer de Provence, the budget for which has been set at 130 million euros.

Eight new hybrid trains

“This line is an essential tool to combat desertificationunderlines Renaud Muselier. It plays an essential role in opening up and serving the territories.”

By the end of 2027, it will consist of eight new hybrid trains, “more efficient and more environmentally friendly” which will allow “to reduce carbon emissions on the line by almost 77%”.

Without giving further details on these hybrid trains, the President of the Region assures that there will be “wifi, air conditioning and comfort”.

The only difficulty today is finding a manufacturer.

A maintenance workshop and a multimodal hub

A maintenance workshop is also planned for the end of 2026. This will improve the quality of train maintenance and reduce operating costs.

Another new feature: the implementation of an information and ticketing system, which will be implemented in different stages, starting in 2025.

In the long term, validators will be installed on board trains and some stations will have automatic distributors. Not to mention a new interface with users.

The Saint-André-les-Alpes and Annot stations are currently being renovated.

Finally, a multimodal hub will be created in Plan-du-Var. “There will be hundreds fewer cars on the road, Christian Estrosi rejoices. It is also a considerable saving in CO2 and a plus for purchasing power.”

The idea is that motorists from the valleys leave their vehicles at the multimodal hub and then take the train and then, once in Nice, the tram or bus. In particular thanks to the extension of the Ligne d’Azur ticket to Chemins de Fer de Provence trains in the Nice-Plan-du-Var urban area.
