Ticino: four more missing after weekend storms

Four people are still in Ticino, after the severe weather that hit the canton this weekend, bringing the death toll to four and six missing in the Alpine country, according to the authorities.

According to police in the canton of Ticino – whose Val Maggia was badly hit by torrential rain on Saturday – the new missing persons are two women and two men.

The search operations are continuing, according to a press release published Monday evening.

Three people died in this canton in southeastern Switzerland in a landslide this weekend.

One person was already missing.

In the neighbouring canton of Valais, to the southwest, one person died in the town of Saas-Grund, a 67-year-old German national who found himself trapped by rapidly rising waters in a cellar of a hotel in the town.

Another person is still missing in the canton, according to authorities.

The Maggia River having washed away a bridge near Cevio, the upper part of the valley was only accessible by air after the bad weather and the army was mobilised to quickly open up the valley by road.

There was no electricity in part of the valley and no drinking water on Monday.

In Valais, rains and a partial flood of the Rhône caused very significant material damage.
