On Sunday evening, Jean-Yves Lalanne thought he would participate in a three-way race with the RN and the MoDem. But all day long, from Pau or from Paris, work was carried out to convince him to lower his flag, as the PCF 64 did in the evening.

Probably against his will, he was also able to play the bargaining chip, so that the PS (of which he is no longer a member) wins the 5th constituency. Finally, around 9:20 p.m., he announced his withdrawal.

“We are withdrawing our candidacy,” confirmed the candidate and his substitute Stéphanie Maza in a joint statement.

“However, when analyzing the results, it is perfectly clear that our pair, elected officials from the field, known and recognized, were the best placed to win this election. But the division has borne fruit. The national rule of withdrawal from the New Popular Front tends to apply here too, even if the situation is different. A risk of erosion of the score is possible,” they note.

Continuing: “Even if the Macronist candidate Josy Poueyto has more reserves of votes than the RN, a part of the left-wing electorate in the constituency fears the accession to the National Assembly of an RN deputy and we reject this. None of our voters’ votes should be transferred to the National Rally. We are making this decision consciously, responsibly.”

No conditions but a wish

Jean-Yves Lalanne and Stéphanie Maza say they are not setting conditions for this call, but are making a public wish: “That the outgoing MP, with her usual language, stops insulting the candidates and in particular Jean-Yves Lalanne “having no dignity and flouting everything”. That the MP and her friends respect our electorate and its elected representatives by stopping practicing discrimination or exclusion.”
