2024 Legislative Elections: Towards 4 or 5 Triangular Elections in Nord-Pas-de-Calais in the Second Round

Candidates for the second round of legislative elections have until Tuesday, 6 p.m., to submit their applications but most of those qualified for this second round did not wait for this deadline to withdraw in favor of the “best” candidate of the “republican arc” in order to beat the RN candidate. At the end of the first round, 12 three-way races were possible in the North (10) and Pas-de-Calais (2). We should ultimately experience up to 5 three-way races in the region.

No triangular in Pas-de-Calais

At the end of the first round, three-way races were possible in 2 constituencies:

  • 5th constituency: the outgoing deputy (Renaissance) Jean-Pierre Pont came in 3rd position. This Monday morning, he announced that he was withdrawing to avoid the RN victory on Sunday, which will see Antoine Golliot (RN) face Olivier Barbarin (New Popular Front-PS).
  • 2nd constituency: the ecologist candidate of the New Popular Front, Alexandre Cousin, who came in 3rd position, withdrew in favor of Agnès Pannier-Runacher (Ensemble). He clearly calls for a vote for the minister, just like the mayor of Arras, Frédéric Leturque, as well as Nicolas Desfachelles (DVG mayor of Saint-Laurent-Blangy), eliminated on the evening of the first round. Agnès Pannier-Runacher will face Alban Heusèle (RN) in the second round.

Up to 5 triangular in the North

In the Nord department, there remains uncertainty about the 6th constituency, which includes the municipalities of Pévèle. Outgoing MP Charlotte Parmentier-Lecocq (Ensemble) narrowly beat Marie-Hélène Quatreboeufs (RN), with 38% of the vote against 35%. The Insoumise candidate of the New Popular Front, Célia Pereira (20%), plans to remainContacted by France Bleu Nord, the young candidate from Orchies is considering staying for two reasons: “out of a duty to represent the left-wing electorate and because of the behaviour of certain Renaissance candidates elsewhere in France”The candidate believes that the Macronist camp is not playing the Republican Front game enough. However, she acknowledges that she has no chance of winning in the second round. in this constituency historically anchored on the right. Célia Pereira must consult with her campaign team and the national electoral committee of La France Insoumise.

On the evening of the first round, 10 triangular races were possible in the North but According to the France Bleu Nord count this Monday evening, withdrawals of qualified candidates took place in 5 constituencies :

  • 5th constituency : Candidate Ophélie Delneste (LFI-NFP) withdraws her candidacy after coming in 3rd position. She calls for voting for Sébastien Huyghe (DVD, supported by Ensemble). A candidate who does not hold a grudge since the scenario was the opposite in 2022: she was the one facing the RN in the second round and the former LR deputy Sébastien Huyghe, at the time, had not given any voting instructions, believing that there was no choice to be made. “between the plague and cholera”.
  • 10th constituency : Leslie Mortreux (LFI-NFP) withdraws his candidacy and calls for a vote against the RN in the second round which will see Bastien Verbrugghe (RN) and Gérald Darmanin (Ensemble) face off.
  • 11th constituency : Ingrid Brulant-Fortin (Ensemble) withdraws her candidacy and calls for a vote for the outgoing MP Roger Vicot (PS-NFP) whom she met this Monday morning and whom she asked to “denounce the indignity and populism of LFI”He will face Maxime Moulin (RN) on Sunday.
  • 13th constituency : Damien Lacroix (LFI-NFP) withdraws his candidacy and calls for a vote for Julien Gokel (PS mayor of Capelle-la-Grande) against Maxence Accart (RN).
  • 21st constituency : Pierrick Colpin (LFI-NFP) is withdrawing but is not giving clear voting instructions for the second round where centrist Valérie Létard and Laurence Bara (RN) will face off.

In the other 4 northern constituencies where there will be a three-way racethe hypothesis of an RN victory on Sunday seems very unlikely, given the scores of the first round:

  • 2nd constituency: the outgoing deputy Ugo Bernalice (LFI) in a favorable position against Philippe Guérard (RN) and Violette Salanon (Ensemble).
  • 4th constituency: the outgoing MP Brigitte Liso (Ensemble) is in a favorable position against Charlotte Brun (PS-NFP) and Anne Morand (RN).
  • 7th constituency: the outgoing MP Felicie Gerard (Horizons) is in a favorable position against Karima Chouia (Ecologistes-NFP) and Céline Sayah (RN).
  • 9th constituency: the outgoing MP Violette Spillebout (Ensemble) is in a favorable position against Odile Vidal-Sagnier (Ecologistes-NFP) and Christine Landru (RN).
