LEGISLATIVE 2024. Bordeaux votes left, “a large city which resists national pressure from the RN”, rejoices Pierre Hurmic

Voters in Bordeaux voted overwhelmingly in favor of the New Popular Front on Sunday, June 30. Two candidates from the left-wing union, Nicolas Thierry and Loïc Prud’homme, even narrowly escaped election in the first round.

The people of Bordeaux, like all French people, were called to the polls on June 30 and July 7. Sunday June 9, President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly. Voters must now vote to elect the 577 occupants of the Palais Bourbon.

During the European elections of June 9, in the Gironde capital, the navy blue wave was contained, even if the left-wing list led by Manon Aubry (La France Insoumise-union populaire), with 13.22% of the vote, was barely ahead of the RN list of Jordan Bardella and its 12.79%.

Coming out of the polls on June 30, it appears that Bordeaux is resisting the navy blue wave in its three constituencies. The city stands out in pink and purple on the map, the respective colors of the NFP and the presidential majority.

“Bordeaux is a large city that resists better than other cities the national pressure of the national rally“, rejoiced the mayor of Bordeaux. Pierre Hurmic welcomed the score of the EELV candidate Nicolas Thierry in the city center who narrowly missed the election in the first round with 49.45% of the votes. He underlines also that the political family of “his main adversary”, Nicolas Florian, elected Les Républicains to the municipal council, ends “between 7 and 8%” and feels so “reinforced by the results of these elections” in Bordeaux.

To continue to “defend them here and in Paris”as “defend the republic, the country, in the National Assembly“. The outgoing MP nevertheless specifies that he “It is difficult to rejoice completely“in view of the national context.

I believe that we need a republican surge and that all those who can achieve this republican surge should work towards it now in the coming hours.

2nd constituency Bordeaux center: Nicolas Thierry almost reaches 50%

In this second constituency of Gironde, which focuses on the city center of Bordeaux, the National Rally is contained. Far behind, the Les Républicains candidate is beaten with 6.88% of the votes.

For the second round, the RN candidate having not totaled more than 12.5% of registered voters, a duel is emerging between Nicolas Thierry and Véronique Juramy.

If his score positions him as the big favorite, Nicolas Thierry immediately reacted to the score of the RN on a national scale, calling it “acollective failure“. “The union of the Popular Front is successful, but perhaps not enough to block the far-right wave” he believes, before recalling the importance of blocking the way in the event of a three-way conflict. “The question is that of withdrawal, of the republican front. On the side of the popular front, we are extremely clear. If we are in 3rd position in the context of a three-way race, we will withdraw to block the situation.”

If everyone actually applies it, the National Rally will not have a majority.

Concerning possible withdrawals or not to promote a republican front, Loïc Prud’homme reacted strongly to the words of Florence Lazzara, the senator Les Républicains or Fabien Robert, guests on the set of the election evening, indicated that they would be done “on a case-by-case basis”.

The chaos to come is that of Mr. Bardella. You have not stopped banning a part of the deputies of the entire Left from this republican arc on criteria that are, if not mendacious, at least often defamatory. Do not come today and tell us, we cannot choose between France Insoumise and the National Rally,” did he declare.
