Garbage fires and projectile throwing

At 9:25 p.m., the gathering turned into a wild demonstration in the streets of Lyon, gathering at least 800 people according to the prefecture. Glass containers were overturned, trash cans set on fire. A minority of demonstrators dressed in black and with masked faces tried to break windows.

Twenty minutes later, on rue de la Barre, police officers were targeted by projectiles, in this case glass bottles, then fireworks mortars. The police responded with tear gas.

The police managed to push back the demonstrators on the slopes of Croix-Rousse and by 10:30 p.m., calm had returned to the Presqu’île. A small group tried to break into the town hall on 1is district but was dissuaded from doing so by the police. No arrests were made that evening.
