The Autonomous Union of Higher Education of the Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (SAES – UASZ) expresses its deep concern following the acts of vandalism that occurred during the riot of the students of the Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor, on Friday November 22, 2024. In a press release, the union strongly denounces this violence and calls for the opening of an investigation.
“In less than two months, thanks to student moods, violence punctuated the demonstrations which took place within the university grounds, causing injuries and enormous material damage,” declares the SAES.
The union recalls that during the students’ latest outburst, one of them was brutalized by the police in flagrant violation of university franchises while the students themselves attacked violently to two of our colleagues to whom they had uttered insults.
This time, the SAES UASZ specifies that it is the vehicles (logistics heritage) of the university which were burned. “These repetitive acts call out to the entire university community and the senior authorities in charge of higher education,” adds the union.
For its part, the SAES denounces with the utmost energy this “violence wherever it comes from and invites the rectoral administration to take appropriate measures to remedy it”.
“It is necessary, especially with regard to acts resulting in material damage and bodily harm, that an investigation be opened and sanctions be applied commensurate with the faults committed,” he concludes.
