The Belgian women’s national rugby sevens team qualified for the semi-finals of the Hamburg tournament, second round of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series, on Saturday.

The BelSevens beat Germany 17-7 in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, they lost their third and final match of the group stage 5-27 to Spain, but were already assured of a place in the quarter-finals after their two victories on Friday, against Turkey ( 29-0) and Italy (26-0).

Belgium will meet Great Britain in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will pit France against Spain. Poland, victorious in the first round in Makarska at the beginning of June, was eliminated in the quarter-finals by France.

Among the men, Belgium was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Ireland 36-7. The Belgians qualified for the quarters thanks to a 59-5 success over Croatia. The day before, they had been beaten by Portugal (24-21) and, already, by Ireland (43-7).

Belgium will face Georgia on Sunday in their first classification match.

The Hamburg tournament constitutes the second and final round of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series. At the beginning of June, Belgium finished third among the women and eighth among the men during the first round in Makarska, Croatia.

At the end of each round, teams are awarded points based on their final ranking. After the two rounds, the points are combined. The first ranked team is declared the champion and the last two are relegated to the Trophy Division.
