Every ten minutes, a woman was killed in 2023 around the world. This is the frightening statistic established by the United Nations (UN). On Monday November 25, 2024, it will publish its report on “feminicides committed by intimate partners or family members”, on the international day for the fight against violence against women. For the occasion, gatherings are planned around the world.
In France, a comprehensive law requested
“Patriarchal violence occurs everywhere, against women, children and LGBTI+ people”denounce, in France, the signatories of the call to demonstrate and their support, from the left and the presidential party. States in particular make headlines when the situation of women's rights deteriorates. “We see it in Afghanistan, where women can no longer speak to each other. The victory of Donald Trump in the American presidential election or the rise of the far right in Europe does not reassure the structures involved in this subject.
Other countries are rather highlighted for their public policies in favor of women's rights. The feminist newsletter Les Glorieuses notably identified New Zealand, Spain and Sweden in terms of reducing wage gaps.
“Rapists are ordinary men”
In France, the cause took on particular resonance with the so-called Mazan rape trial, the accusations of sexual violence against Abbé Pierre and Gérard Depardieu. “We sense, in public opinion, a sort of astonishment to realize that the rapists are ordinary men”says Suzy Rojtman.
Thursday, November 21, a coalition of more than sixty organizations published 140 recommendations for “a comprehensive law against sexual violence”. It provides a framework for “effective public policy to combat sexual violence” ; educational and training measures for “roll back sexism and rape culture” ; a plan to improve the “victims’ legal journey” and a catalog of measures dedicated to specific violence.
Gatherings will take place on November 23 in Niort, November 25 in Tours, Blois and Poitiers. All events are listed on the websites of the regional prefectures of Centre-Val de Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
