A sixty-year-old woman lost her life on Tuesday, between Nantes and Angers, after the spontaneous combustion of her “homemade” heating device. According to the first elements of the investigation, overheating caused the grains contained inside to catch fire.
All eyes converge on the hot water bottle. In Loire-Atlantique, a 69-year-old woman lost her life in a fire which broke out at her home, a house in Loireauxence, between Nantes and Angers, on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The tragedy took place in the middle of the night, while the victim and her septuagenarian husband were sleeping at home. The nighttime intervention of the firefighters made it possible to extinguish the fire, but did not save the sixty-year-old. According to the first elements of the investigation, everything seems to indicate that a homemade hot water bottle was at the origin of the disaster.
Auto-inflammation
Joined by Le Figarothe Loire-Atlantique gendarmerie group confirms that a heating device of this type would indeed be linked to the start of the fire, a little before 1:30 a.m. According to our colleagues at West France a hot water bottle “homemade”installed under the sheets of a bed, seems to have found itself in a state of overheating. The wheat grains inside then reached their auto-ignition point, causing the hot water bottle, the bed and then the chamber to burn.
Burned while trying to save his wife during the fire, and in a state of shock, the victim's husband, a 71-year-old man, was transported to the Ancenis hospital center. The victim's autopsy, carried out on Wednesday, confirmed death caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, due to the fumes.
