Athletics: The Swiss championships take place Friday and Saturday in Winterthur

The Bernese Ditaji Kambundji will be one of the big attractions of the Swiss championships in Winterthur.

The country’s best athletes will compete this Friday and Saturday at the “Stadion Deutweg” in Winterthur as part of the Swiss elite championships (singles and multiple). These correspond to the last competition before the end of the qualification period (Sunday June 30) for the Paris Olympic Games.

Several athletes can still hope to qualify for the Olympics through the World Ranking. In total, 33 national titles will be awarded (17 for women, 16 for men). Here are the main highlights of the two days of competition.

Friday

Women’s 100m

The women’s 100m final will be the highlight of the first day of the Swiss championships this Friday. After her triumph in the 200m final at the EC in Rome, the main contender for the title is European champion Mujinga Kambundji, already crowned 13 times over the distance. Her main rivals are EC semi-finalists Salomé Kora and Géraldine Frey, both in search of times and points with a view to the Olympic Games. Sarah Atcho-Jaquier and Léonie Pointet will also be involved in the medal race.

men’s 100m

The defending champion in the 100m and 200m, William Reais, will have as competitors Bradley Lestrade, Akira Eghagha and Fabio Luginbühl, all of whom have fallen below 10.50 this season. The experienced Pascal Mancini hopes to create a surprise.

Pole vault

European champion Angelica Moser is aiming for an eighth consecutive national title. In the men’s pole vault, a duel is expected between co-national record holder Dominik Alberto and the 2023 EC U20 silver medallist, Valentin Imsand.

Long jump

Simon Ehammer, bronze medalist at the Europeans in Rome with a jump of 8m41, shines with his consistency over 8m. The four-time Swiss length champion plays in a category of his own on the national scene.

SATURDAY

200 m feminine

European 200m champion Mujinga Kambundji is aiming for an 8th title over the distance. Her main rivals are the two Vaudoises Léonie Pointet and Sarah Atcho-Jaquier as well as Géraldine Frey.

men’s 200m

Bronze medalist at the EC in Rome, William Reais will face Felix Svensson and Bradley Lestrade as rivals. European champion Timothé Mumenthaler, however, has to withdraw from the Swiss championships due to a muscle problem.

Men’s 400m

Finalist of the Europeans in Rome, Lionel Spitz will fight a duel with Ricky Petrucciani, 2022 European vice-champion in Munich. Charles Devantay and Vincent Gendre can aim for a place on the podium.

800 m feminine

Reigning Swiss champion Audrey Werro, Lore Hoffmann, Rachel Pellaud and Valentina Rosamilia will fight for the national title. The four athletes also covet the three places for the Paris Olympics and the final will be decisive for the Olympic selections.

100m hurdles

Ditaji Kambundji will be the big CS and favourite in the high hurdles. At the European Championships in Rome, the Bernese woman took silver and improved her Swiss and European record for the under-23s (12″40). Annik Kälin and Selina von Jackowski have a good chance of completing the podium. In the men’s event, defending champion Jason Joseph is aiming for a seventh consecutive title in the 110m hurdles (Saturday, 5:15 p.m.).
