Fraud and falsification of documents: former professor at the University of Sherbrooke pleads guilty

Former professor at the University of Sherbrooke Robert Day admitted his guilt to charges of fraud, production of forgeries and use, possession or trafficking of a counterfeit document.

Last January, he was fined just over $38,000 for producing false expense invoices and obtaining reimbursements greater than the amounts actually spent.

The 64-year-old man is said to have falsified invoices and proof of payment which were found during a search carried out in July 2021 at the university establishment.

From 2012 to 2018, while he was a professor and researcher in the Department of Surgery of the Urology Service of the Faculty of Medicine and Science at the University of Sherbrooke, Mr. Day allegedly fraudulently claimed expense reimbursements using false documents, the Anti-Corruption Commissioner said in a press release on Thursday.

The loss suffered by the University of Sherbrooke amounts to $109,132.95 and comes entirely from funds dedicated to research, particularly in the fight against cancer.

The Anti-Corruption Commissioner (CLCC) is a specialized police force whose mission is to ensure, for the State, the coordination of actions to prevent and combat corruption in the public sector.

The former professor had already been arrested in September 2023 and then released on a promise to appear for fraud of more than $100,000 committed between December 1, 2012 and December 31, 2018, reported the Permanent Anti-Corruption Unit (UPAC).
