The Rambouillet hospital center was ordered by the court of Versailles (Yvelines) to pay €7,841.53 to the descendants of a patient after a diagnosis error, reports Republican Echo this November 19, 2024
In 2018, the man presented himself to the emergency room explaining that he had the sensation of having a “dead hand” for several minutes. He came out the same day, the results of his electrocardiogram and blood test having been judged “normal” by the nursing staff.
A waste of luck
But what doctors had attributed to a “weakness of the left forearm in a context of physical exhaustion” was actually a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Two days later, the patient suffered a stroke, which caused a functional deficit of 50% on the left side of his body.
The court found that additional examinations should have been carried out during his visit to the emergency room, and that: “the absence of appropriate treatment, following the diagnostic error, led to a loss of chance of escaping the after-effects of the stroke”.
