The orange vigilance for the “wind” parameter which concerns the whole of Corsica this Wednesday, November 20 led the firefighters of the Haute-Corse Fire and Rescue Service to intervene several times during the night.

“In the Bastia region, several public road clearances have been carried out in addition to or in support of road services”indicates SiS 2B.

The city center of Bastia was also not spared from the strong gusts. Firefighters were mobilized in the Giabelli district, in support of EDF teams, following the fall of a pylon “making electric arcs on public roads”.

In the same Giabelli neighborhood, firefighters also responded to a fire in a house. The disaster was quickly brought under control. “Difficult to say, for the moment, if it is linked to the fall of the electric pole”indicates Sis 2B.

For the moment, no injuries have been reported in the department where, this Wednesday morning, “a tree fell on the roadway on the road to San-Martino-di-Lota”adds Sis 2B.

Regarding South Corsica, also affected by this orange vigilance, no damage has yet been reported by the Sis 2A teams.

Faced with this weather situation, the Corsican Community has decided to cancel its transport.

“Due to the predicted strong winds, school transport services (Via Scola) and intercity transport (Via Strada) operated by the Corsican Community will not be provided on Wednesday November 20, 2024”indicates the CdC in a press release.

According to the Météo-France bulletin, “the Libeccio gradually strengthens from Tuesday evening and during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. It becomes stormy in the morning of tomorrow Wednesday and remains so until the evening.”

Thus, we expect gusts of the order of:

  • 110 to 130 km/h in Bastia from the morning and later, around midday in Porto-Vecchio;
  • 120 to 150 km/h in Balagne and on the terrain all day (or even a little more locally on the terrain);
  • 160 to 180 km/h on Cap Corse all day.

According to forecasts, “the wind gradually calms down in the evening”.

Corsica is placed on orange alert for the “wind” parameter from this Wednesday at 8 a.m.
