The prefecture of Guyana, in collaboration with the town hall of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the Guyanese water company and the regional health agency of Guyana, confirm that tap water in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is again consumable for drinking and cooking.

The salt level in the water has returned to a level slightly higher than normal.

End of distribution of drinking water

The distribution points temporarily installed in the city, equipped with drinking water covers, will be removed from this Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

Specific measures for people with kidney failure

People with advanced kidney disease (stages 4 and 5) should continue to avoid drinking tap water because the salt level remains slightly higher than normal for their health.

The distribution of bottled water by the town hall of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is maintained in the dialysis centers.

Forecast for December

The low level of rain could lead to a further increase in salinity in early December. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will inform the public if action needs to be taken.
