The young politician, already a member of the legislature, was able to count on his party’s high score. The PLR won two seats on the municipal council. If Luca Longo is elected mayor, the executive will be predominantly of his political color (4 out of 7 elected officials). “There is no reason to fear PLR hegemony. The mayor represents all citizens,” he notes.
Her competitor is trying to explain this radical raid. “In the first round, people often vote for a list as a block and in the second the people. Moreover, contrary to our formation which is an agreement, the PLR was able to rely on the means of a national party and therefore lead a big campaign, sometimes almost aggressive,” notes the mayor.
Whose green voices?
The latter believes that it has every chance of catching up. It will be the votes of the candidate who came in third position, the Green Aurèle Louis, who will be worth a lot. “If the logic is respected, the left electorate will turn to me since our party has no political color and is placed in what I describe as a broad center. Before the arrival of the Greens four years ago , Forum was already pursuing a policy concerned with the environment. In addition, federal objects will undoubtedly mobilize a part of the electorate who did not vote in the first round,” she believes.
But its competitor also intends to recover green votes. “Their candidate is a young person like me so some voters will perhaps bet on youth even if the political side is different. In this scenario, I win.”
Youth was precisely a campaign element. “The people of Neuvevillois have the choice between novelty or maturity and the experience that I embody. And the results of my legislature are rather good”, estimates the one who will have a strong feeling of unfinished business “while certain files are at the end touching” if she has to leave her chair. “I have difficulty with this trial of inexperience. It borders on contempt sometimes. The position of mayor is a militia mandate so no one can claim to have mastered everything. Furthermore, I have some experience in the field of public policy” , sweeps the PLR candidate.
End of campaign controversy
In the home stretch of this long campaign – which some describe as very dense and which has sometimes taken on a dimension going beyond traditional municipal politics – a small bombshell was caused at the end of last week. The local newspaper Le Courrier published a political ad calling for support for the outgoing mayor. However, this advertisement bore the municipal coat of arms and no mention of the Forum party. “The use of the city’s coat of arms is strictly regulated and prohibited in such a case. This may have misled the voter. We will see how the mayor and her party react but it is not impossible that we will file an appeal”, notes Luca Longo. “This is a regrettable error by the Forum group. The newspaper will publish a correction,” indicates Catherine Frioud Auchlin.
