The Municipal Council takes place this Wednesday, June 26 at the Capitol. The opportunity for Toulouse elected officials to vote on the various deliberations planned in the program. But before starting, Jean-Luc Moudenc spoke. In his opening remarks, the mayor of Toulouse notably announced a new measure which aims to strengthen security in the city: the municipal police will be equipped with 25 LBDs (Defense Ball Launchers).

More resources for law enforcement in Toulouse

Jean-Luc Moudenc first recalled the Municipality’s commitment for ten years to improve security. An approach supported in particular by the various measures put in place in recent months by the government. The mayor thus welcomed the “Place Net” operation carried out by the State in April in Toulouse, which made it possible to obtain notable results: “ 118 arrests, 132,700 euros seized, more than 20 individuals taken to the borders by the police, weapons seized, cannabis, heroin, and cocaine, ten prison sentences and four suspended sentences pronounced. This operation, which I hope will not be a one-off, was therefore a success. »

But the Toulouse city councilor does not intend to stop there in terms of security and public tranquility. He then qualifies: “This operation also had the merit of showing that when you put in the means, you get results. It also legitimizes our actions, namely to ask the State and successive governments for more resources, particularly human resources, both for the national police in Toulouse and for justice. »

As for the police, Jean-Luc Moudenc welcomes the results of their actions: “Last year, there were no less than 2,000 images captured by our video protection and surveillance center requisitioned for investigations; no less than 12,000 patrols were organized in all districts of Toulouse; no less than 41,000 interventions were carried out by our municipal police officers; no less than 9,300 fines were issued by our police for incivility and noise pollution; 1,500 arrests. Furthermore, video surveillance made it possible to identify no less than 500 situations of distress or discomfort in public spaces. »

Municipal police equipped with LBD

The mayor’s observation is as follows: “Given the development of the municipal police in recent years and their increasingly intense presence on the ground, they are often the first responders on the ground, it is they who are there first, most often, to note this or that infringement. It thus contributes greatly to security and, above all, to public tranquility to which our fellow citizens have the right. »

This is why he decided to put in place more security measures. Jean-Luc Moudenc then declared: “We will therefore continue to strengthen the municipal police and I decided to equip it with dissuasive intermediate-level weapons without resorting to firearms. And therefore the municipal police will be equipped with 25 LBD (Defense Bullet Launcher). » Its deployment will take place gradually after “the prior and systematic adapted training in the handling of this weapon. »

At the same time, the mayor assures that he is working to extend the powers of the municipal police. Identity checks, fines, etc. The objective of this approach is that municipal police officers can “play a much stronger role, if they had the right, to stop drug trafficking. »
