The rules for parking Rivesaltes, near Perpignan, change completely. In a few weeks, this town hall in the Pyrénées-Orientales will deploy a brand new parking system automated by sensors on 11 car parks of the municipality, in order to encourage the rotation of vehicles in several sectors.

In these blue zones, motorists will have nothing to do, apart from keeping in mind their arrival time. They will thus be able park for free during two hours. But not a minute longer, otherwise you’ll take a fine of 35 euros.

After two hours, a fine of 35 euros

“It’s being installed. We do not yet have the precise date of entry into service,” explains the municipal police of Rivesaltes to News Perpignan. The operations should take a few more weeks. A trial phase will be organized as soon as all the sensors are in place. The new system will be deployed at the end of this.

Concretely, each parking space will be equipped with a sensor. The device will send data (registration, arrival and departure time) of each car to the municipal police. Beyond two hours free“a fixed fine of 35 euros will be applied”, warns the town hall.

11 car parks affected in Rivesaltes

Here is the list of car parks affected by the measure:

  • Weavers car park
  • Parking Place République
  • Boulevard Arago
  • Place de Gaulle
  • Jaurès car park
  • Avenue Gambetta
  • Avenue Ledru Rollin
  • Poste Parking
  • Parking Foch
  • Parking Fafa Espeu
  • Parking Zola

This free parking, but limited to two hours, will be in effect from Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday between 7 a.m. and noon. Parking will not be regulated on Sundays and public holidays.

“You will have to change parking spaces every two hours”

What if you want to stay more than two hours? Impossible. No payment terminal has been installed. “You will just have to change parking spaces every two hours,” confirms the municipal police.

“For people who wish to park for periods of more than two hours, large car parks are available within the municipality. Parking will not be limited to two hours in the Arnaud de Villeneuve car park and the large car park located behind the town hall,” specify the municipal police officers.

Residents launch petition

These arguments did not convince some residents of the town. Under the town hall’s Facebook post, several Rivesalt residents expressed their dissatisfaction: “Completely disproportionate solution”, tackles one of them. “It’s complete rubbish,” added another.

The comments sometimes go even further. “Thank you very much for making the parking even more execrable for people living near these car parks,” quips another.

A petition was even published on the change.org website. The authors of this text, already signed by around fifty people, denounce a measure with “dramatic consequences”.

“What do you do when you are sick? »

“If we cannot move our vehicle after two hours, we risk a fine every time, several times a day. What do you do when you’re sick, for example? Or going out on a date? In case of emergency ? », the authors ask in particular.

They hope that this petition will be an opportunity to open a dialogue with the municipality. They conclude: “We look forward to your return and are at your disposal to participate in a public discussion or any other compromise solution. »
