The Grisons village of Brienz was completely evacuated, the municipality of Albula said on Sunday afternoon. The 91 residents had until 1:00 p.m. Sunday to leave the area threatened by a large mass of rock.
Brienz is now in the red zone, meaning access is prohibited until further notice. Domestic and farm animals were also evacuated.
After the 1:00 p.m. ultimatum, officials from the municipal authorities, the cantonal office of military affairs and civil protection, the police and the fire brigade carried out a inspection round throughout the village. No one was there anymore, the municipality said. A Keystone-ATS journalist present in the Grisons village noted that the operations took place without a hitch.
In order to enforce the access ban and guarantee security, the village will now be monitored electronically, the municipality announced. The latter, however, clarified that the place is not interesting for thieves, the residents having taken all their valuables during their evacuation.
The two access roads to Brienz are now blocked. The fate of the village threatened by a new landslide is not clear. He should be cut off from the world at least until next spring.
