If Madame de Sévigné were to write to us from beyond the grave to tell us about her life, what would her last letter look like? In a new double story, Virginie Girod lends her pen to the most famous letter writer and imagines the marquise’s ultimate testimony.

Born in 1626 into the high aristocracy, under the reign of Louis XIII, Marie de Rabutin-Chantal was orphaned at the age of seven. Baron de Chantal, his father, died at the siege of La Rochelle, joined by his mother a few years later. Madame de Sévigné grew up pampered by her grandparents, then her aunts and uncles.

Wealthy and nicknamed “the most beautiful woman in France”, the young aristocrat did not fail to attract marriage proposals. She married Henri de Sévigné, to whom she gave two children: Françoise and Charles. The Marquise delights in Parisian social life, but the couple’s atmosphere deteriorates. Henri has several extramarital affairs and dies in a duel for the heart of one of his lovers, Charlotte de Gondran. At 25, Marie de Sévigné was a widow.

Themes covered: Louis XIII, Madame de Sévigné, romantic intrigues
