“Our message is simple: that the Mercosur treaty is not signed and that the display of the origin of products is made compulsory. There is no need to block the roads and bother the people who are going to work to get this message across.” It is Franck Pellerin, the general secretary of the FDSEA in Morbihan who expresses himself thus.
This Friday, November 15, the representatives of the first agricultural union wanted to express their concerns regarding the treaty which should liberalize trade between Europe and South America. “It is an agreement that would allow products to enter France whose environmental and societal requirements are not the same as those of us, including the use of prohibited substances in our production,” denounces Marie-Andrée Luherne, president of the FDSEA in Morbihan. And recalls the distortion of competition that this would create on prices.
“A pressure cooker”
But for the moment, the union is not announcing any particular demonstration in the department, when other union representatives are announcing mobilizations on public roads from Monday. “The urgency and priority is to finish the harvests, the sowing and bring the animals in before winter,” warns Nicolas Chesnin, dairy producer in Nivillac.
However, union representatives recognize that if the base moves, the mobilization will take place. “We listen to our members,” emphasizes Marie-Andrée Luherne. “It’s a bit like a pressure cooker. We are under pressure and it can suddenly go away.”
To these consumers whom they want to preserve on the roads and in stores, the union representatives send a message: “With each act of purchase, you have a ballot to boycott what you do not want! “.
