If the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles are among the most famous French monuments around the world, they are not the only ones to deserve our attention. All regions of France are home to unmissable sites for those interested in the architecture and history of our country. Generation Travel recently published a list of the most beautiful monuments in France, we have selected ten.
1. The Palais des Papes in Avignon
The Palais des Papes in Avignon is the largest Gothic construction of the Middle Ages. However, its construction only took 17 years, from 1335 to 1352. Visitors particularly appreciate the main tower, which overlooks the city, but also the large chapel, the large promenade, the frescoes, the stained glass windows, the furniture, the hangings and sculptures.

2. Place Stanislas in Nancy
Considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, Place Stanislas in Nancy is distinguished by its harmonious and classic architecture. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, it earned Nancy its nickname of “City of Golden Gates”, because of its six monumental wrought iron gates, enhanced with gold leaf.
3. The amphitheater of Arles
Built in the first century AD according to a most ingenious architectural plan, the amphitheater of Arles extends over 130 m long. While it was originally used to organize chariot races and gladiator fights in front of nearly 21,000 spectators, it now hosts major cultural events.

4. The Hospices of Beaune
This flamboyant Gothic style hospital, recognizable by its glazed Burgundy tiles, was built in the 15the century. Funded by the region's annual wine auction, it received patients until the 1960s. Today open to visitors, it is one of the most emblematic tourist monuments in the region.
5. Notre-Dame Cathedral in Reims
A true masterpiece of Gothic art, Reims Cathedral was built during the 13th century.e century. Known for having hosted almost all of the coronations of the kings of France, it also stands out for its impressive size and its 2,303 statues, a world record.

6. The Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, in Orschwiller
A major place of Alsatian heritage, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle was built in the 12th centurye century then completely renovated in the last century. Standing on a rocky spur, at an altitude of 800 m, it dominates the magnificent landscapes of the region. Weapons room, drawbridge, forge, spiral staircases… The building takes visitors on a real journey through time, to the heart of the Middle Ages.
7. Strasbourg Cathedral
The most visited cathedral in France since the closure of Notre-Dame de Paris to the public, that of Strasbourg impresses visitors with its majestic side. Outside, its statuary is full of details that can focus attention for hours. Inside, its astronomical clock with a perpetual calendar is particularly appreciated.
8. The Sainte Chapelle of Paris
The Sainte Chapelle in Paris attracts many tourists because of its 618 m² of stained glass windows. The central rosette alone has around a hundred meticulously decorated petals. The religious building is also famous for housing several prominent relics, such as the Crown of Thorns.
9. The castle of the Dukes of Brittany, in Nantes
Built mainly in the 15the century, the castle of the Dukes of Brittany was first used as a princely residence, before being transformed into a military fortress. Ramparts, museum, moat… The places are now full of activities, which delight tourists on vacation in Nantes.
10. Saint-Nicolas Cathedral, in Nice
The most important Orthodox cathedral outside Russia is located in Nice. Named Saint-Nicolas Cathedral, it is recognizable by its six bulb-shaped green domes, its pink bricks, and its black marble. Its interior walls are painted blue and gold, in an imposing and exuberant style.
