Cosmetic surgery in Türkiye: the surgeon leaves in the middle of the operation, his patient dies

A 38-year-old British woman, who reportedly paid the equivalent of $12,500 for three cosmetic surgeries in Turkey, lost her life after being abandoned by her surgeon in the middle of the operation, the coroner heard on Wednesday.

“The surgeon left mid-operation and left the anesthetist to do the work. We can’t do both at the same time,” Neil Dowell insisted on Wednesday, during a coroner’s inquest into the death of his wife, Hayley Dowell, which occurred last year in Turkey, according to “The Independent”.

An investigation into the death of the thirty-year-old would have been opened on Wednesday when she would be among the six Britons to have lost their lives in 2023 following botched medical procedures in Turkey, causing concern among the authorities.

It was in October 2023 that the woman from Hampshire, England, traveled to Turkey with her husband to obtain a Brazilian butt lift, an abdominoplasty and liposuction for the price of 7,000 pounds sterling, or nearly 12,500 $, according to the British media.

“We found a surgeon who had a clinic named after him. He was one of [cinq meilleurs] surgeons of Türkiye,” the bereaved spouse told the court, according to “The Independent.”

But the operation which should have lasted six hours, according to her husband, would have ended in just 1 hour 45 minutes, while the surgeon would have hastened to leave, leaving the reins to the anesthetist in the room, would have -he indicated before the coroner.

It was then that she allegedly began to suffer from an embolism, a complication that causes a blockage of blood flow, which would have proven fatal.

What’s more, Neil Dowell felt that his wife had not been properly informed of the risks, even though she had only consented to two of the three operations before going under the knife: the third consent form did not give her consent. would have been presented only “after his death”, while the healthcare team would have “asked him to sign it”, we can read.

“She could not have known the risks” since she had not signed the three forms, lamented in turn the victim’s mother, Ann, before the coroner, according to “The Independent”.

The coroner’s inquest is continuing to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this death.

Cosmetic surgeries in Türkiye are particularly popular due to their low prices, although they are subject to warnings in several countries, including Canada.
