After 50 years of service, the copper network is now aging, requires more frequent repairs, and no longer provides sufficient connection quality to support everyday use.
Orange, the historic operator that owns the copper network infrastructure, announced at the end of 2019 its desire to technically close it between 2023 and 2030. This shutdown involves the migration to optical fiber, a more modern and efficient network and this change in technology. concerns businesses, administrations and individuals alike.
Although it is progressive, it is now essential to prepare for it. Residents, traders and other beneficiaries of the copper network must therefore take steps to switch to fiber to avoid a landline and Internet outage.
In Maine-et-Loire, 7 municipalities will experiment with this change in technology on January 27, 2025: Chanteloup-les-Bois, La Plaine, Les Cerqueux, Nuaillé, Somloire, Toutlemonde and Vezins; and 2 municipalities on January 31, 2026: Mazières-en-Mauges and Saint-Christophe-du-Bois.
In the second batch affected by the copper shutdown, the commercial closure is scheduled for January 27, 2025 and the technical closure for January 27, 2026. In the third batch the commercial closure is for January 31, 2026 and the technical closure is for January 31 2027 (see annex for the national calendar). Residents, traders and other beneficiaries of the copper network must therefore take steps to switch to fiber to avoid a landline and Internet outage.
