From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 November 2024, from high tidal coefficients are expected, going up to 102 for Saturday November 16, 2024. This will be the case for example north of Caen on the Mother of Pearl Coast (Calvados).
The maritime prefect calls “for the greatest caution to all users of the sea, and in particular those who fish on foot or who walk on the coast subject to the tide. A few minutes can sometimes be enough to be isolated by the rising tide. »
A “more dangerous sea”
Spring tides have the effect of increasing the tidal range (difference between the height of high water and that of low water) with greater mixing of sea water and a faster rise of water; “They therefore make sea currents stronger and the sea more dangerous, leading to an increased risk of isolation by the tide. As a reminder, in 2023, 344 people found themselves isolated by the tide. »
The main cause of isolation by tide remains negligence on the part of walkers, but also a lack of knowledge of the local environment. It only takes a few minutes to be surprised by the rising tide and trigger the mobilization of significant resources – air and water.
What to do in an emergency
Reminder: If you are the victim or witness of a sea incident, contact emergency services by telephone by dialing number 196 or on channel 16 of your VHF.
