A flame to awaken awareness and rekindle the duty of memory among as many people as possible, and particularly among younger generations. This ambition is at the origin of the organization of a Flame of Memory trail in Finistère, a project supported by the Department, the Prefecture and the Armed Forces.

This first edition – which should lead to others – will take place from November 26 to 29, 2024 in Finistère. “The wish to hold an event of this nature was shared with the prefect Alain Espinasse who had organized a similar mobilization in his previous functions in Savoie,” summarizes Maël de Calan, the president of the departmental council. This desire resonated with the desire of Jean-François Quérat, the maritime prefect of the Atlantic, to strengthen the link between the army and the nation.”

Six itineraries in Finistère

This first edition will have a special character with the 80th anniversary of the Liberation and will mobilize college students and soldiers. “The idea of this tribute is to give new impetus to the ceremonies by giving them a more popular dimension. These times of remembrance must not be limited to elected officials and veterans,” continues Maël de Calan.

The journey of the Flame of Memory will begin in on November 22, 2024, during a ceremony under the Arc de Triomphe where the flame will be taken from the tomb of the unknown soldier by around thirty middle school students from public, private and of Diwan. The flame reaches Finistère thanks to a cycling relay carried out by a team of soldiers.

Once on Finistère territory, six emanations provided by military units of the Flame will join six starting points: Ploudalmézeau, Kerlouan, Saint-Pol-de-Léon, Saint-Goazec, Quimperlé and . From there, they will begin their respective journeys before converging towards the tip of Pen-Hir in Camaret-sur-Mer, the place of arrival for a final ceremony where more than 600 young people from Finistère will be gathered. They will walk to the Monument to the Bretons of Free where the flame will be placed. During these stages, ceremonies and activities will be put in place with the schools and communities visited.
