The socialist mayor of the Normandy town clarified this Wednesday, November 13 that it is a high-grade tumor in the bladder, but that he is “fine”. He is finishing his last cycle of immunotherapy.
“I'm doing well. I'm well looked after, I'm well looked after and loved.” Without delay, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol is reassuring. A few moments before, this Wednesday, November 13, the mayor of Rouen announced that he had a bladder tumor.
The 47-year-old socialist councilor, also president of the Normandy metropolis, specifies, however, that it is an aggressive cancer – said to be high grade – developing rapidly. He does not suffer from metastases, but has faced multiple recurrences.
In 2022, during the presidential campaign, he detected blood in his urine after jogging, a sporting activity which stimulated his bladder. The first diagnosis showed a 3 cm tumor.
In February of that year, Norman had surgery. Then a second time in April 2023. And a third time in June 2024. Currently, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol is finishing his last cycle of immunotherapy.
Despite his treatment, the mayor of Rouen does not intend to reduce his political action. “Never has my determination to act to change life been so great,” he wrote on his social networks.
“Lead by example”
This announcement is part of the presentation of an action plan “aimed at strengthening the caring support of the professional community for personnel suffering from cancer”.
“I know something about having cancer. Many patients find themselves isolated. In addition to medical suffering, there are also psychological, emotional and social difficulties,” we can read in a press release. “Several forms of cancer are caught chronically at younger and younger ages.”
Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol notes that the disease is “still a taboo subject”. “We need to talk about it and act,” he says. “The city of Rouen and the Rouen Normandy metropolis wish to set an example.”
The action plan constructed by the communities aims to “fight against the isolation of people during their illness”, “facilitate the return to employment” and “develop a caring, aware and welcoming professional ecosystem”.
