Canada announced on Tuesday that it had opened an investigation into the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after receiving a complaint regarding the processing of biological samples taken from athletes.
The complaint accuses WADA of having communicated personal information to international federations which allegedly used it to “evaluate the eligibility of athletes based on their sex without their knowledge or consent”.
This information was also allegedly used for purposes “that would not be considered acceptable” under Canada’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPEDA), according to the petition filed with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. .
The investigation thus aims to establish whether the collection, use and communication practices of the AMA, which has been subject to Canadian regulations since 2015, are compliant with PIPEDA.
In response, the international organization indicated that it was “aware of the investigation” and “hopes to be able to clarify its position with the Commissioner in due course”.
