The Kingdom of Morocco continues to demonstrate its “unwavering commitment” to the mission of the Provisional Secretariat of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) aimed at promoting world peace and fostering nuclear non-proliferation, said the ambassador representing Permanent Representative of Morocco to International Organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, on the occasion of the 63rd session of the Preparatory Commission of the CTBTO.
In 1996, Morocco was among the first countries to sign this Treaty contributing to the negotiation and adoption of the CTBT, recalled the diplomat, reaffirming the Kingdom’s attachment to promoting the eradication of nuclear tests in order to achieve global and complete nuclear disarmament.
Indeed, Morocco signed the treaty in 1996 and ratified it in 2000, and has since contributed to global efforts aimed at promoting the entry into force of the treaty and its universalization with the ultimate goal of eliminating nuclear weapons and to achieve complete disarmament, he insisted.
Morocco’s commitment was reflected in the co-presidency, with France, of the sixth Article XIV conference and the establishment of a joint action plan in order to breathe new life into the ratification process. of this treaty and encourage African countries to ratify this important legal non-proliferation instrument, he said.
Morocco, which remains “fully attached” to the principle of multilateralism and the promotion of South-South cooperation, believes that strengthening the capacities of the African continent through the organization of training sessions and workshops for African experts is likely to contribute to the achievement of the CTBT’s non-proliferation objectives, Farhane argued.
« In this context and in less than two years, we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the CTBT “, observed Farhane, proposing, on behalf of Morocco, to organize a high-level segment in Vienna, under the African presidency of the next CTBT preparatory commission in 2025, like the process of the ministerial conferences of the article her universalization.
