Drought rages in the north and east of Reunion

Regular water cuts are what residents in the East are experiencing, but also those in the Salazie and Cilaos cirques. Despite the heavy rains at the start of the year, resources are declining.

Drought has been raging in since February, after the passage of cyclone Belal in January and tropical storm Candice just after. Despite the rainy passage of several cold fronts during the winter, water resources remain in deficit.

At the Rivière du Mât, the watershed represented by the Salazie cirque is no longer as well supplied as before. The Water Office agents notice this each time they go out. If the flow of the river at the start of the year was around 2000 liters per second, during this period this flow is half as much.

Surface resources and groundwater are both affected. Water outages at night may occur here or there. The director of the Water Office calls on the people of Reunion as a whole, individuals, communities, industrialists and businesses to save water.
