This November 11, 2024 was the opportunity to celebrate the 106th anniversary of the Armistice of the 1914-1918 war but also the 100th anniversary of the city's war memorial, through an exhibition at the Antirouille, Place du Foirail.
Solemnity, this is what we will remember from the commemorations of 106e anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between French and Germans, November 11, 1918 in Compiègne. But it was also the last official outing of Philippe Castanet, prefect of Lozère, on November 11, 2024 on the Place du Foirail. It was the brass band of the Municipal Harmony which opened the march of the officials to the center of the square, where various army corps were waiting, including a picket of honor from the 13e brigade of the Foreign Legion of La Cavalerie in Aveyron, and a large crowd.
The city's war memorial is 100 years old
After the raising of the colors, a cadet of the Republic spoke, to recall the importance of memorials in collective memory: “They are real sentinels who remind us of the sacrifice and suffering endured by our elders. They are also a symbol of commitment, never again.”
Philippe Castanet, prefect of Lozère, then took the floor to deliver the message from Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs. As a preamble, he did not fail to share his emotion at the time of departure: “I would like to underline the honor given to me to preside over the commemorative ceremonies since April 2022 in Mende and Lozère.”
After the laying of wreaths and the minute of silence, officials and curious people went to Antirouille to honor the exhibition dedicated to the hundred years of the city's war memorial and the 10 years of the Forêt des Poilus, overlooking the Lozère prefecture. An exhibition traces the major stages of the monument and various weapons and utensils from the Great War.
