Shops are often absent from rural villages which, for some, welcome a lot of tourists in summer but often seem a little too quiet in winter to convince young people to settle down. However, demand is strong, successful initiatives are more and more numerous and supermarkets themselves are once again asking the question of ultra-proximity.
In the Greater Périgueux agglomeration, in Sainte-Alvère (municipality of Val-de-Louyre-et-Caudeau), the village grocery store has experienced strong growth in recent years. In Trémolat, we had been trying to respond to the residents' demand for a long time and the municipality wanted to take the time.
Fresh products and bread supply
A market study was entrusted to the Chamber of Commerce, and a survey was carried out among food stores in neighboring villages in order to draw inspiration from good practices. The goal was to determine the precise destination of an 80 m² premises, located in the center of the village, and purchased in 2021 for 80,000 euros.
The municipality completely restored the building for a highly negotiated amount of an additional 80,000 euros. She then decided to temporarily entrust the management of this business to an association already present in the village, but without links to the Municipal Council.
This associative grocery store opened on Tuesday October 15, under the leadership of Cathy. The mayor, Éric Chassagne, relishes: “Since the opening, the success has been extraordinary. » In collaboration with Intermarché, in Le Bugue, and local producers, this new rural business offers the essentials, namely fresh products, canned goods, hygiene products, drinks and even frozen foods. Another advantage? Big box prices. Added to this is a supply of bread and pastries.
Practical. Cathy welcomes her clients from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
