Opponents of the High Speed Line (LGV) Bordeaux-Toulouse now expect to be dislodged. Following the court decision of Friday November 8, 2024, authorizing the felling of trees along the Lateral Canal, at Saint-Jory (Haute-Garonne), one of the perched “squirrels” was extracted and exfiltrated by the gendarmes.
“Alignment Trees”
Several groups occupy the site to try to preserve these famous “line trees”, including a century-old oak and plane trees.
“The administrative court of Toulouse did not recognize that the trees of the Saint-Jory lock were street trees, thus following the requests of SNCF Réseau and disregarding environmental law. However, SNCF Réseau has committed not to cut down the century-old oak tree of the lock on Saturday,” assures Arthur Grimonspokesperson for the Taskforce against the A69 and the LGV.
Two prefectural decrees
Anticipating a stagnation in the situation, or even a radicalization of opponents, the prefecture published a decree on Friday.
It concerns the temporary ban on carrying and transporting weapons or objects that could serve as weapons, in the municipalities of Saint-Jory, Lespinasse, Castelnau-d'Estrétefonds et Fenouilletbetween Friday 8, 6 p.m., and Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 6 p.m.
Another decree authorizes the capture, recording and transmission ofimages from aircraftover the same period, which corresponds to the tree felling campaign planned by the SNCF.
A specialized unit in action
“A squirrel was dislodged by the gendarmes on Saturday, and this Sunday, it is the CNAMO (A unit specializing in this type of intervention against activists, editor’s note) which intervenes with a basket,” explains Arthur Grimon. In Saint-Jory, the situation is tense.
