This Monday, June 17, the Olympic torch relay is celebrating its 33rde stage in the overseas department of Martinique, Mount Pelée has Fort-de-France.
Distinguished as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Martinique has an abundant land and sea territory. On this special day, the Olympic flame will work to highlight its diversity, its treasures and its most illustrious representatives, including Aimé Césaire. The flame’s journey will begin at the summit of Montagne Pelée with a lighting which will take place at daybreak. The Olympic flame will travel to Lamentin, the economic center and second most populous city on the island. Then, it will head towards Robert for an explosive relay via the Passe de l’Écurie, a narrow passage on the sea. La Flamme will thus give a nod to the tradition of skiffs, these traditional Martinican boats.
The rest will take place in Sainte-Marie, Saint-Esprit before crossing Saint-Pierre. Recognized as “the little Paris of the Antilles”, the city was razed by the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902, from which Belem, present 30 km away, escaped. The route will make reference to this event by passing in front of the Old Theater and the Memorial of the Disaster of 1902. Then, the Olympic flame will rise in the commune of Diamant by going to the summit of Morne Larcher before going to Cape Town. 110, memorial dedicated to slavery.
