Inrap is leading a excavation on the square in front of Angers Cathedralahead of the upcoming construction of a protective structure for the western portal.

On the occasion of the next European Archeology Daysthe excavation site will be exceptionally open to the public on Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16. Guided tours, commented by Inrap archaeologists, will be offered continuously, as well as a range of activities for all audiences allowing them to discover preventive archeology and its professions.

A medieval gallery discovered

Archaeologists have exhumed the masonry remains of an old medieval gallery destroyed in the 19th centurye century, as well as part of wall of the old curial chapel. They also unearthed more than 80 burials, from medieval and modern periods.

They thus unearthed almost the entire west wall of the medieval gallery – and in particular its southern buttress, the entire southern wall, and the internal facing of the northern masonry.

Remains to be discovered exceptionally this weekend.
