Frederick Wiseman on his documentary film “Domestic Violence”

In March 2002, in an issue of “No one is perfect” devoted to the 24th edition of the Cinéma du Réel festival in Beaubourg where Domestic Violence, his new film, is presented, American director Frederick Wiseman talks with Antoine Guillot.

How to film the issue of domestic violence?

Frederick Wiseman describes how, with Domestic Violencehe confronted the question of violence, a theme present in most of his films. This time, he did not film violence as we encounter it within police, military or psychiatric institutions, but violence as it can be unleashed in the intimacy of private space: domestic violence. Frederick Wiseman admits that it is, in his eyes, the manifestation of the most incomprehensible violence.
