Climat Vendée forecasters have taken stock of the month of October 2024 in the department.

A month largely marked by heavy rainslinked to storm Kirk, which hit Vendée at the beginning of October.

Floods in Noirmoutier

It is impossible to take stock of the month of October without mentioning the Kirk storm, which caused a lot of damage to the Vendée lands. More particularly on the island of Noirmoutier, where a crisis unit had even been set up by the municipality.

The passage of Storm Kirk will have left significant accumulations of rain in Vendée with no less than 50 to 70mm and up to 100mm in Noirmoutier, causing significant flooding.

According to specialists, cumulative rainfall exceeds 100 mm everywhere in Vendée with : 114 mm Sables-d'Olonne (+ 43 %) 189 mm in Noirmoutier en Île (+133%) or even 140 mm at ( +42 %).

In addition to significant amounts of rain, the sun was practically absent in October “with a fairly marked deficit for the second consecutive month”: 138 hours at Château-d’Olonne, i.e. a deficit of – 11% compared to a normal month of October and 107 hours in La Roche-sur-Yon, i.e. a deficit of -17%.

On the other hand, the minimum temperatures were rather mild “due to an often cloudy sky during the night of 10 to 12 °C or + 0.5 to + 1.5 °C compared to seasonal norms,” conclude the forecasters.
