Adib Alkhalidey or the art of discomfort

Let’s say that my comfort was taken for its cold, Monday evening, during the comedian’s visit to the Odyssée hall in Gatineau, for an extra of his show Whores and thieves.

Alkhalidey came to present his fifth one man show in Gatineau on January 19.

At the start of the year, we unfortunately missed this first visit. There was therefore no question of ignoring this recall launched all in music, a cappella in addition.

With a stool as his only prop, he spent the first few minutes telling us that he is “happy” and that he loves life, but already the discomfort had set in.

Immigration, racism, abortion, inclusion, happiness, the economy, education, family, all from a simple car ride in the countryside on a Saturday morning… and intrusion of a mosquito.

From Tim Hortons to the Rolling Stones

Labor shortage explained with the closure of a Tim Hortons branch at “illegal” hours. This is a hilarious, but very intelligent, way of approaching this social problem.

It’s like the automated checkouts at the supermarket which, for Adib, are the symbol of the abuses of the food giants during the pandemic.

The comedian clearly registers as the guy of the people. The one that depicts the everyday Adib, without a mask, makes us think. THE snoro is also impactful. He throws our failings in our faces.

Starting with a piece of land, he explains the concept of property to us. “If you can’t shit on it, it’s not yours!” he tells us with all the seriousness in the world. It must be said, however, that he had just launched into a long explanation before concluding with this sentence. But everything is said in these few words.

The animal pulls in several directions, but always in a subtle and intelligent way. In the end, Adib is “like everyone”… with his differences.

I tell you, you have to see this boy at all costs, as much for the unease and discomfort as for these two hours of reflection. And also because when we are uncomfortable, we think!

And to think that all this time we could hear Sympathy for the Devil of the Rolling Stones!

Ending at the beginning

Jean-Michel Élie opened for the Alkhalidey show, as has been the case since the start of the tour. Football player or comedian, I choose the comedian without hesitation, especially when he talks to us about being single, with its ups and downs of course.

He’s even more hilarious when he describes his experience as a jury member. Pissing!

And no, dear Jean-Michel, you are not “ordinary”!

End of course

The tour Whores and thieves is coming to an end.

After this extra at the Odyssée hall in Gatineau, he will hold another extra in Brossard on July 18. Alkhalidey will also be at the Grand Théâtre de Québec on July 27, at the Patriote in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts on August 14 and at the Théâtre de la Ville in Longueuil on August 15.

The series of shows will end on August 29, with an additional performance at the Salle André-Mathieu in Laval.
