The regulation of the Mont-Tendre pack is taking its course. On the night of November 3 to 4, the Canton indicates on its website, a new wolf, alone, found itself in the sights of wildlife wardens. They fired but were unable to get their hands on the animal, “despite several blood searches carried out the next day, with the help of specialist dog handlers (red dogs)”. writes the Directorate General for the Environment (DGE). The action was quick, making it impossible to learn more about the wolf in question. This “inherently difficult” research was “intense”.

This wolf may be either dead or injured. An appeal was launched to wildlife inspectors, forest guards, hunters as well as partners in neighboring . Citizens are not particularly encouraged to track down the animal or its remains but are asked to report any discovery to the Wildlife-Nature Police, adds the Canton.

The shooting site remains confidential. The Canton specifies, however, contradicting accusations reported by wolf defenders, that no animal carcasses were deposited for regulation purposes: “The Wildlife-Nature Police force does not bait wild animals.”

Challenging shooting campaign

This is the second shooting on this pack of the Vaudois Jura with a view to completely eradicating it, a possibility offered by the new law on hunting and the policy attributed to Federal Councilor Albert Rösti, a strategy in which the Canton had refused to embark in 2023.

This shooting campaign was marred by several complications. In addition to the presence in the mountain pastures of opponents of the shooting, some of whom were the subject of complaints from the Canton, the State had to reorient its shooting order following discussions with the Federal Office for the Environment (OFEV), which stipulated to target Cub Scouts as a priority, until October 31. Fifteen days earlier, however, a “young wolf” had already been killed within the perimeter of the pack.

The shooting campaign is authorized until January 31.
