The Occitanie Region makes electric bikes available to high school students in Gard – News – Gard – Occitanie

In Sommières, the Lucie Aubrac high school is one of the establishments which will benefit from a free electric bicycle loan service, thus promoting more ecological and autonomous travel.

Soft mobility is at the heart of current issues and in this context, the Region wishes to meet the expectations of young people, by experimenting with a free electric bike loan service for high school students. A system aims to encourage daily journeys by two-wheelers, thus offering an ecological and accessible alternative to conventional transport. This week, the first beneficiary establishments will receive their bikes, including the Lucie Aubrac high school in Sommières in the . The delivery, scheduled for this Thursday, November 7 at 2 p.m., will be made in the presence of Jean-Luc Gibelin, regional vice-president, delegate for mobility for all and transport infrastructure.

200 bicycles produced in Occitania

This project was designed in response to the expectations expressed by high school students during a consultation led by the Region. The 200 bicycles, produced in Occitanie thanks to a group of local companies (including Actia, FlyingCat, Optitec, Seridecal and Vélo Factory), will be deployed in five establishments in the region. Students from the Claude Nougaro high schools in Monteils (82), Martin Malvy in Cazères (31), Pyrène in Pamiers (09), Jean Jaurès in Saint-Clément-de-Rivière (34) and Lucie Aubrac in Sommières (30) will thus be the first to benefit from this experiment.

In addition to the individual loan, the Region also plans to make fleets of bicycles available to meet the various needs of establishments. This offer could in particular be used for school outings, intramural travel, or even professional travel for teaching and administrative staff. By investing in greener and more autonomous mobility, the Occitanie Region wishes to inspire a sustainable transport model: “Traffic fluidity, decarbonization of mobility, physical exercise: the bicycle contributes to air quality and public health better than any other mode of transport,” says the Occitanie Region.
