Our departments of Aisne, Marne and Ardennes are losing schoolchildren each time the school year begins. A demographic decline which can also be seen on a national scale.
What is going on with us?
Aisne had 527,500 inhabitants in 2021. The department had lost 11,200 inhabitants since 2015, or 2.1% of its population, according to INSEE data. The natural balance has collapsed in recent years: the number of births no longer compensates for the number of deaths.
This can be explained in several ways, according to INSEE des Hauts-de-France. “On the one hand, the birth rate has declined sharply in recent years. This decline is the result of a fall in fertility and the decreasing number of women of childbearing age in the axon population. »
Axonese women are having fewer children but the number of those of childbearing age is also falling due to the aging of the population and the numerous departures of young workers.
INSEE thus observes that “the absence of a large employment pool and the low offer in terms of higher education lead students and young professionals to leave the department”.
In the Marne, the birth rate (the ratio of the number of births in the year to the average total population of the year) is also declining. To illustrate this fact, we can cite the number of couples with children which increased from 67,000 in 2011 to 60,530 in 2021.
In the Ardennes, which is also losing inhabitants, the share of women of childbearing age now represents only 31.5% of the department's population.
