It’s time to get out your physics textbooks. The expert surveyors of the Marne measured the center of gravity, or barycenter, of Champagne Marne. This Thursday, June 6, in the presence of UNESCO and winegrowers from Moët & Chandon, a terminal was inaugurated at the exact location of their calculation.
The term barycenter probably means nothing to you. Marie Renfer, surveyor in charge of the project, is used to explaining it. “We imagine that we take strings that we pass through the center of each communeshe explains. At the end of these strings, we will carry a weight, that of the surface area of vines planted in these communes. Finally, we bring these strings together and the place where it balances is the barycenter.“
A desire to highlight Champagne
Stroke of luck, the barycenter of Champagne Marne is located right in the middle of the vineyards, on the Fort Chabrol estate, which belongs to the Moët & Chandon house. This location, on a UNESCO world heritage site since 2015, supports the approach of surveyors, who wish to highlight the territory.
The choice of terminal also goes in this direction. The white color was chosen in reference to the chalk quarries, and the golden rivets evoke the bubbles of Champagne.
