The town of Chambon-sur-Voueize, in the east of Creuse, is officially a candidate for the “most beautiful villages in ” label. It is the first Creuse commune to aim for this heritage and tourist recognition. It has two listed buildings, the Sainte-Valérie abbey church and the Romanesque bridge. The jury will make its decision on June 28, 2025.

La Creuse will perhaps finally join the very popular club of 180 municipalities in France with less than 2,000 inhabitants which proudly display the label “most beautiful villages in France”. The village of Chambon-sur-Voueize has in fact officially applied for the label.

The mayor of the town, Cécile Creuzon has just announced it, with a smile.“this is an incredible opportunity for the town. We have already been the third favorite village of the French and this has energized the town”, she recalls. “But here, it’s like obtaining the Legion of Honor. It will boost businesses, allow the reception of new populations and offer influence to the whole of Creuse.”

If the village obtains its precious sesame, it will become the first in its department to be able to display such a label.

To obtain the label, Chambon-sur-Voueize must meet 32 ​​criteria, such as not having more than 2,000 inhabitants, but also, the obligatory one, of having at least two buildings classified as heritage, which is the case with the abbey church. Sainte-Valérie and the Romanesque bridge.

Cécile Creuzon recalls that this abbey church “is the largest in Limousin, in Romanesque style, and it contains the treasure and relics of Sainte-Valérie”.

All around the building, there is also cobblestone paving “quite rare in Limousin, with stones from the river. We take great care to preserve them and even to highlight them after having been covered with bitumen”, explains the chosen one. The jury now has six months to decide, and the response is expected by June 28, 2025.
