The Somme is also a land of sailing

“Ona water, we have wind, we have skills. We have everything for sailing.”François Joliveau, president of the departmental sailing committee in the Somme, wants to be a fervent defender of the practice of this sport in the department, or rather of these sporting disciplines.

“When we talk about sailing, there are actually six ways to practice. From sports sailing to dinghy sailing (the one present at the Olympic Games) but also windsurfing, kite surfing and radio-controlled sailing.”

Somme: Sailing from Fort-Mahon to Conty

And all these disciplines can be practiced in the four corners of the department: “My mission as president of the departmental committee is to explain to communities, particularly communities of municipalities, that it is possible to develop bodies of water to develop the practice of sailing, and the Department will also accompany.”

Indeed, in addition to the recognized schools on the coast at Fort-Mahon, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Mers-les-Bains, for example, many sites go sailing inland: “for example, the Saint-Martin lake in Conty is a very beautiful place in which you can put dinghies. These are small boats that make it easy to race and enjoy it. You also have to count on the Argoeuvres lake which has the advantage of being very close to Amiens. We bring many children there for discovery workshops. “

To further develop the practice of sailing in the Somme (which will have 744 licensees in 2024), Théo de Ramecourt is a perfect ambassador. He is among the best kitesurfer in the country. Unfortunately, there was only one place to represent France in Marseille at the beginning of August during the Games: “He trains with the selected ones and it pushes him hard. On the water it is spectacular. It’s a great success for the Cayeux-sur-Mer club”summarizes François Joliveau.

A sport which requires good physical condition, to have a particular look at one’s environment and which can be practiced in ever more spots in the Somme. Sailing has everything in the wind in the department.
