Proligue – J9: JS Cherbourg Manche Handball loses by a small point (27-28) against leader Dijon

The Mauves of JS Cherbourg did not come far from bringing down the leader, this Friday evening in a sold-out Jaurès room. Dijon Métropole Handball, a resident of Starligue last year and a big part of the Proligue championship, remains undefeated after its victory over JS Cherbourg (27-28).

After a first period where the Cherbourgeois lacked efficiency, quite the opposite of the DMH which finished with a 28/33 on shots, against 27/45 for the JSC, Fernandez Rura's men had a good second half, even returning to a tie five minutes from the end of the match. The match film can be read below.

For the goalkeeper of JS Cherbourg Manche Handball, Nicolas Gauthier, the defeat is complicated to digest, because according to him, there was room to take points against the leader. He wanted to thank the public: “We play sport to play in these atmospheres, we said to ourselves before the match that we wanted to get this victory for them, for our supporters, it’s very frustrating”.

Key moments of the match

  • End of the match: Frustratingly, the JSC lost by one point against the leader Dijon. 4th defeat of the season for the Mauves.
  • 55': Finally! The equalizer for Cherbourg! With success, number 10 Tavares Landim allows the Mauves to return, in a Jaurès room in melting (24-24)!
  • 53': NO! Pereira's equalizing penalty hits the opponent's left post. Dijon is still in front (23-24)!
  • 48': Success is finally on the side of the locals! The JSC is within a small point of the leader thanks to a penalty from Pereira (21-22)! This promises a heated end to the match here in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
  • 45': Fifteen minutes from the end of the match, the Mauves are still in the game, but they are three points behind. Unfortunately, the JSC wastes its offensives with only 56% success on shots (compared to 81% for Dijon), like a save by Wassim Helal on a penalty from David Estepa Ruiz in the 46th.
  • 36': The Cherbourgeois come back with good intentions. Only three points left to make up to come back level with Dijon, notably thanks to a superb save from Gauthier on Naudin. Unfortunately the JSC misses the mark twice to come back to within two points of Dijon (17-20).
  • Half-time: with 95% shooting success, leader Dijon offers Cherbourg a lesson in efficiency this evening at Jaurès. If the Cherbourgeois are far from being ridiculous, the DMH maintains its rank of 1st in Proligue. The Mauves are trailing after 30 minutes of play and are four points behind (14-18).
  • 21': Dijon's efficiency is quite impressive. Out of 13 shots, the visitors scored 12. In success. 13 to 10 for the former Starligue resident.
  • 15': Dijon takes the lead, helped by a few errors from the JSC and the exclusion (2 minutes) of Thomas Loppy. Coach Cherbourgeois called a time out. 9-5 for Dijon Métropole Handball.
  • 8': After eight minutes of play, Cherbourg and Dijon are back to back (3-3), the goalkeepers are in the spotlight with a save from Nicolas Gauthier. Ditto on the Dijon side with Maximiliano Soliani in the cages. The Cherbourg residents are, for the moment, at the level of this shock facing the leader of Proligue.
