Wild boar hunting is open in Cergy-Pontoise (Val-d'Oise). During the last community council, the elected officials of the former New Town approved the establishment of an agreement intended to regulate the overpopulation of wild boars which is affecting the commune of Puiseux-Pontoise.
It is on land which belongs to it and where it has the right to hunt that the town has commissioned the Courcelles-sur-Viosne hunting company to organize hunts over an area of 13 hectares.
Multiple damage
According to the agglomeration, there is an urgent need to act. “Since 2001, the overpopulation of wild boars has led to numerous complaints at the municipal and intercommunal level,” reports the agglomeration. “Particularly affected”: the commune of Puiseux-Pontoise and the perimeter of the intercommunal cemetery “where the wild boar is currently causing multiple damages: increase in the number of road traffic accidents, destruction of green spaces as well as cultivated agricultural spaces, unrest for users on various public sites (medical centers, nursing homes, etc.), as well as for local residents living in peri-urban areas. »
If no means of regulating the wild boar population is decided, the agglomeration does not rule out the risk of seeing its liability brought before the courts in the event of damage, “either because it has favored the multiplication of the population , or because it has failed to take appropriate measures to ensure its regulation through levies.”
Beyond the legal consequences, intercommunality also points to “a financial impact which is already notable”. “It is currently measured by the significant costs of repairing sites managed by the city (fences, lawns, plantations, monuments), which are damaged mainly by wild boars. » Finally, the agglomeration indicates that a recent letter signed by the prefect of Val-d'Oise “reminds it of the essential nature of reintroducing hunting leases on the plots belonging to it due to current problems, which cannot be resolved. resolve without its intervention in the impacted sectors of which it is the owner.
Despite a convention adopted unanimously, ten community councilors abstained, first and foremost the Greens.
“We know well that the management of the wild boar population is complex, there are proven destructions, but we also know that the wild boar population in France has been favored by the policy led by hunters through distributions of cereals with game, judge Maxime Kayadjanian, Eelv community advisor. We are therefore not very comfortable with this situation where on the one hand we have great damage and on the other a social body which has favored the proliferation of wild boars. This is why we will abstain.”

And the ecologist wonders about the possible danger that hunting poses to residents and other walkers: “We are in a peri-urban area with homes, I imagine that all security measures will be taken. This raises questions…”
“In this location, there are very few homes. On the other hand, there is the Chaussée Jules-César which is frequented by hikers, replied Thierry Thomassin, the mayor (dvd) of Puiseux-Pontoise. I have known the Courcelles hunting company for several years, they are very serious people who take all the necessary precautions to avoid a hunting accident. »
The wild boar population is a problem, it must be taken care of, especially on the edge of town
For this professional farmer, elected mayor of Puiseux-Pontoise in March 2001 following his father, Jean-Gérard, there is no doubt: the wild boar population deserves to be regulated. “As someone who has lived in Puiseux-Pontoise for 70 years and who is a hunter in my spare time, I can assure you that we have never done anything to bring in wild boars, but we have a significant population increase. We kill 4 to 5 wild boars per year in Puiseux-Pontoise… My father, who was a hunter, killed only one in his entire life… The wild boar population is a problem, it must be taken care of, especially in edge of town. »
