The bill is expected to increase further this summer for natural gas subscribers. The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has planned new pricing which should come into force on July 1st.

Bad news for consumers

Bad news for gas consumers. The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) announced an increase of the reference price of natural gas for the 10.5 million subscribers.

Prices had already started to increase in May and June following “a slight increase in wholesale market prices of natural gas, which had been falling since the end of 2023”, explained the CRE in a press release. . However, this time, the surge in prices is due to the application, from July 1, of new pricing (ATRD7) to GRDF’s natural gas distribution networks.

Increase in distribution costs

This new tariff should make it possible to take into account the increase in charges weighing on natural gas distributors. These increases should compensate for “a gradual decrease in gas consumption and an increase in biomethane production”, indicates the CRE in a press release published in mid-February.

The aim is to “maintain a high level of security for the networks and to actively contribute to the energy transition, in particular by allowing the integration of biogas into the networks”, justifies the regulator.

Decrease in number of subscribers

But the increase in prices is above all a reflection of a reduction in the number of natural gas subscribers. In two years, their number has fallen by 197,000 and the “decline in consumption and the number of GRDF customers will continue over the course of the tariff with an impact of approximately +1.9% per year”, estimates the CRE. The price hike therefore affects remaining customers.

Impact on consumer bills

This pricing change occurs after the end of the tariff shield and the doubling of the normal excise rate on natural gas for fuel use on January 1. This measure increased taxation from €8.45 to €16.37 per megawatt hour (MWh).

For July, consumers should expect a 5.5% increase, i.e. €7.3 including tax per month on the heating bill and 10.4%, i.e. + €2.2 including tax per month on the domestic/cooking hot water bill. Based on the average annual consumption of 13,480 kWh, our colleagues from Ouest-France estimated that the amount of the bill could “go from €1,489 to €1,571 per year” for households using gas as a means of heating. heating. And “from €245 to €270 per year” for cooking and hot water.

In February, the CRE nevertheless tried to temper the announcement of these price increases by indicating to Les Échos that they should be compensated by a reduction in gas prices on the wholesale market. “CRE’s current projections anticipate an average benchmark price of around 120 euros per megawatt hour (including tax) for July 2024, lower by around 6 euros per MWh than the average price for December 2023,” the Commission also indicated in its press release. of March 2024. However, with the wholesale market price increasing slightly, the CRE’s forecasts should indeed be reconsidered.
