Seven American veterans in the spotlight this Tuesday in the Channel: who are these heroes?

The Manche department officially honored seven American veterans, Tuesday June 4, 2024 in Saint-Lô.

A look back at the journey of these heroes.

Warren G. Goss, at Utah Beach on June 6, 1944

Warren G. Goss was drafted into the US Army at age 18 in the 4e division. Member of the 531ehe landed at Utah Beach during the first wave on June 6, 1944 at 6:30 a.m.

His job was to secure the beachhead and subdue two German bunkers so that engineers could clear the beaches for D-Day equipment, supplies and the next waves of soldiers to disembark.

Warren G. Goss then fought to Cherbourg and across northern France until Germany, participating in the battles of Saarbrücken in the Ardennes and the Ruhr Valley in the Rhineland. He ended the war in Frankfurt, Germany, in May 1945.

Alan M. Shapiro, aviator in Normandy

During WWII, Alan Shapiro takes pilot training. It is shipped in England and pilots a C-47 aircraft used to drop paratroopers behind enemy lines, supply ammunition and fuel to allied armored units in Normandy and beyond. He participated in the dropping of the 17e Airborne division in Germany.

He and his unit were then transferred to Abbeville, where they took over the airfield which was home to Hermann Goering’s Me-109 squadron.

Otis Branon, in Hiroshima in 1945

Otis Branon volunteered to serve in the army in 1944 at the age of 17. He was assigned to the 532e Amphibious Engineers Special Brigade and sent to the Pacific. Otis participated in two island invasions, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

After the bombs were dropped on the JapanOtis’s unit was among the first in Hiroshima where he remained with the occupying army until the end.

Ronald Scharfe, at the Battle of Iwo Jima

Ronald “Rondo” Scharfe was born September 14, 1927 and raised in Chicago.

At 16, he lied about his age to join the Navy. He participated in battles at Hawaii, Gwam, and many other invasions. On February 19, 1945, Rondo participated in the invasion of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima.

Arthur Hullet, in Germany in 1945

Arthur Hullet was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 at the age of 18. He served with the occupying forces in Mannheim, Germany in the 453rd Quarter Master Unit for 13 months.

Returning home in the fall of 1946, he was recalled early in the Korean War where he served there for 13 months.

Howard Polin at the weather service

Howard Polin was deployed to England in April 1944, assigned to the 18e 352 meteorological squadrone group of hunters, where he served until the end of the war.

Howard was then transferred to Bron Airfield in Lyon, France, then on an occupation mission to Munich, Germany.

John Carroll, peacekeeping

John Carroll lives with his parents and four older brothers when the war breaks out. They are committed.

The cadet did the same at a very young age and was sent to Germany and Europe for his military service where he served as a dental assistant. John Carroll comes to the Channel to share with the veterans, in memory of his brothers.
